GET QUOTEIn the UK, solar photovoltaic systems are the most widely used smart energy technology. In order to power their homes with the free, pure energy produced by the sun, more than a million households have switched to solar panels.
Solar panels may now be installed practically everywhere and can take the form of glass, roof tiles, slates, membranes, and more thanks to increased efficiency and technological breakthroughs.
Reducing your electric cost is one of the key ways solar panels can help you save money. Because solar panels can produce electricity from the sun, you can rely less on the utility company to provide the power you need to run your home's appliances.
You might be able to get compensated for producing solar energy in some circumstances. Numerous utilities provide customers with solar panels the opportunity to sell the extra electricity they produce through various programmes.
By raising the value of your house, solar panels can also help you save money. Homes with solar panel systems often fetch a higher price when they are put on the market. The reason for this is that buyers are willing to pay more for a home that already has solar panels installed as they become more and more popular.
Solar panels are unlikely to decrease the value of your home, even if they aren't the most attractive feature physically. While there is no hard and fast rule for how much value solar panels can add to the overall worth of your property, suggestions range from 4% to 14% on average.
Frequently asked questions
What types of roofs can have solar?
Most types of roofs can have solar panels. However, roofs aren’t usually installed with solar in mind, so you may have to make some adjustments to your current roof.
Tile roofing
Tile roofs are highly compatible with solar panels and make them easy to install
Asphalt roofing
Asphalt shingle roofing also works great for solar panels and involves a very simple installation process.
Metal roofing
The roof type that is most compatible with solar panels is a standing metal roof. The standing seam allows for easier and cheaper installation without drilling into the roof.
Slate roofing
Although slate roof tiles are fragile so we need to take special consideration and care when working, slate is one of the best roofs for solar panels because once the panels are installed, the mounting holds fast against the tiles. The process for slate is pretty much identical to installing on tiles, as brackets are fixed onto an exposed rafter.
Thatch roofing
Traditional thatch roofing poses great challenges for solar panel installation, Solar panels require electrical currents, wiring, and other devices that can heat up in the process of generating and transmitting solar energy. Installing these types of devices on dried traditional thatch would not be advised as there is a significant fire risk.
What do I do if my roof needs fixing?
Getting a new roof for your home is a major project as it is, and adding any additional parts like solar panels only makes the process even more complicated. If you have solar panels on your roof, you’ll need to undergo at least two additional steps for your roof replacement.
My roof is not suitable
Ground-mounted solar panel systems are becoming increasingly popular. Ground solar panels are great if your roof isn’t suitable but you have garden space.
Do I need a south-facing roof for solar panels?
No. This is one of the biggest myths in solar. Even when solar panels aren’t facing directly south, they can still produce large amounts of electricity, If your roof faces east or west instead of the optimal south-facing, you will only see a 20% decrease in the amount of power your panels produce. Your solar panels would still produce enough electricity to save you hundreds (if not thousands) of pounds a year.
Does my roof need to be angled?
For most properties, the ideal angle is typically between 30 degrees and 45 degrees. Doing so ensures you will get the maximum average output from your solar power system throughout the year.
If you have a flat roof, we can mount the solar panels at an angle so they will produce more power.
Can I have solar if I live in a listed building?
Listed buildings cannot be demolished, extended or altered (this includes installing solar panels) without permission granted by the local planning authority (LPA).
Do I need planning permission?
Solar panels are ‘permitted developments’ for homes so don’t require planning permission unless you want a ground-mounted array or you live in a listed building or a conservation area (see below). If you’d like to learn more about permitted developments, please visit the Government’s planning portal Planning Portal.
Can I have solar if I live in a conservation area?
If you live in a conservation area and would like to install solar panels, contact your local council. They will evaluate and decide if the solar panels you want to install will maintain the aesthetic of your local conservation area.
Will solar increase the value of my property?
