The Cord One and Cord Zero are smart 7.4kW home EV chargers designed to make charging your electric vehicle simple, convenient and more cost-effective.
Both chargers offer intelligent off-peak charging, Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity, app control, solar compatibility and dynamic load balancing, giving you everything you need for smarter home charging.
The main difference comes down to how you connect your car.
The Cord One is a tethered charger, with a permanently attached Type 2 charging cable available in 5m or 7m lengths. Simply park up, plug in and charge.
The Cord Zero is available as an untethered charger, giving you a clean, minimalist installation while allowing you to use your own Type 2 charging cable. Cord Zero is also available in tethered versions with 5m or 8m cables.
Cord chargers are designed to help you make the most of cheaper electricity tariffs.
Through the Cord App, you can schedule charging around your electricity tariff and automatically charge during cheaper off-peak periods. You can also start or stop a charge remotely whenever you need to.
Rather than charging immediately every time you plug in, your Cord charger can work around your schedule and your energy tariff to help keep your EV running costs down.
Both the Cord One and Cord Zero feature built-in Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity, helping your charger stay connected even when your home Wi-Fi isn't available.
This allows you to manage charging remotely, access smart charging features and keep an eye on your charging activity through the Cord App.
So whether your charger is connected to your home Wi-Fi or using its mobile connection, you can stay connected to your EV charger wherever you are.
The Cord App puts your home charging controls in the palm of your hand.
You can:
The app also supports integrations with compatible energy tariffs, including Intelligent Octopus Go, helping you make the most of smart EV charging.
The Cord One is the ideal choice if convenience is your priority.
It features a permanently attached Type 2 charging cable, meaning you don't need to keep a separate charging cable in your car or connect one to the charger every time you arrive home.
Available with a 5m or 7m cable, you can choose the length that best suits your driveway and parking position.
Simply park up, plug in and let your charger do the rest.
The Cord One also features a compact design, Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity, solar compatibility and dynamic load balancing.
Prefer a cleaner, more discreet charger?
The Cord Zero untethered is designed without a permanently attached cable, allowing you to connect your own Type 2 charging cable whenever you need to charge.
This gives you greater flexibility over your charging cable and creates a neat, uncluttered look when the charger isn't being used.
Cord Zero is also available in tethered 5m and 8m versions if you want the convenience of a permanently attached cable but prefer the Cord Zero design.
Cord chargers can automatically schedule your vehicle to charge during cheaper electricity periods, helping you take advantage of compatible EV tariffs.
You can set your charging preferences through the app and let the charger handle the timing, rather than manually setting a timer every evening.
Cord chargers are compatible with a wide range of EV tariffs, including Intelligent Octopus Go.
Already have solar panels — or thinking about installing them in the future?
Both Cord One and Cord Zero are solar compatible, allowing you to integrate your EV charging with your home's solar generation.
Cord One can also use Monta's Virtual SolarCharge functionality, which can enable solar charging without requiring a CT clamp.
This means your EV can become another way to make use of the renewable energy your home produces.
Dynamic load balancing helps your charger respond to what's happening elsewhere in your home.
If your household electricity demand increases — for example, if you're using the oven, washing machine and tumble dryer at the same time — the charger can automatically adjust its charging output.
This helps protect your home's electrical supply while still charging your EV whenever possible.
Both Cord One and Cord Zero support dynamic load balancing.
With both Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity built in, Cord chargers are designed to stay connected and keep smart charging features available.
This also means you can monitor and manage your charger remotely through the app without needing to be standing next to the unit.
Both the Cord One and Cord Zero can deliver up to 7.4kW of charging power, which is the maximum charging rate available to most UK homes with a single-phase electricity supply.
Depending on your vehicle, a 7.4kW charger can add around 30 miles of range per hour, making overnight charging an easy way to keep your EV ready for the next day's journeys.
The actual charging speed will depend on your vehicle's onboard charging capabilities.
Cord chargers are designed for permanent indoor or outdoor installation and include a range of built-in electrical safety features.
The Cord One is rated IP65, while the Cord Zero untethered is rated IP54, providing protection suitable for outdoor installation. Both feature IK08 impact protection.
Safety features include:
The chargers are also designed to comply with the relevant UK electrical and EV charging standards.
Is the Cord One or Cord Zero compatible with my electric vehicle?
Yes. Cord home chargers are designed to work with electric vehicles using a Type 2 charging connection, which is used by the vast majority of EVs sold in the UK.
What's the difference between Cord One and Cord Zero?
The main difference is the cable. The Cord One is tethered, meaning it has a permanently attached Type 2 charging cable. It is available with a 5m or 7m cable. The Cord Zero untethered has a Type 2 socket instead, allowing you to use your own charging cable. Cord Zero is also available as a tethered 5m or 8m version.
Do Cord chargers need Wi-Fi?
No. Cord chargers have both Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity, meaning they can remain connected even when your home Wi-Fi isn't available. However, app-based features require an internet connection. The Cord Zero can still authorise a charging session using the supplied RFID card if there is no internet connection.
Can I charge my EV using cheaper overnight electricity?
Yes. Cord chargers are designed to work with compatible EV tariffs and can automatically schedule charging during cheaper off-peak periods. You can also manually schedule or start charging through the Cord App.
Do Cord chargers work with solar panels?
Yes. Both Cord One and Cord Zero are solar compatible. This makes them a good option if you already have solar panels or are considering adding them to your home in the future.
Does Cord Zero come with a charging cable?
The untethered Cord Zero does not include a permanently attached charging cable. You'll connect your own Type 2 cable when charging. If you prefer the convenience of a built-in cable, Cord Zero is also available in tethered versions, or you can choose the Cord One.
Can I leave my charging cable connected to Cord Zero?
Yes. The Cord Zero can lock your charging cable into the charger through the app, helping prevent somebody from unplugging the cable while you're not around.
Can I use an EV tariff such as Intelligent Octopus Go?
Yes. Cord confirms that the Cord One, Cord Zero and Cord Zero Tethered are compatible with Intelligent Octopus Go.
Is the Cord One suitable for outdoor installation?
Yes. The Cord One has an IP65 rating and is designed for outdoor installation.
Is Cord Zero suitable for outdoor installation?
Yes. The Cord Zero untethered has an IP54 rating and is suitable for permanent indoor or outdoor installation.
Which Cord charger is best for me?
If you want the quickest and easiest charging experience, the Cord One is a great choice. Its permanently attached cable means you simply park up and plug in. If you prefer a cleaner, more minimalist installation and want the flexibility to use your own charging cable, the Cord Zero untethered is the better option. If you want a built-in cable but prefer the Cord Zero design, the Cord Zero tethered is also available with 5m or 8m cable options
Whether you choose the Cord One or Cord Zero, you're getting a smart 7.4kW home EV charger designed around simple, cost-conscious charging.
With automatic off-peak charging, Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity, app control, solar compatibility and dynamic load balancing, Cord gives you the technology to charge smarter without making everyday charging complicated.
Choose the Cord One for convenient plug-in charging with a built-in cable, or the Cord Zero for a cleaner, more flexible charging setup.
